Growing hyacinths as pot plants

چکیده

Creating a forcing schedule A forcing schedule can be drawn up by using the previously listed cold periods. For example a forcing operation wants to have marketable pot hyacinths with flower clusters easily visible between the leaves on 7 December. If it takes one week to green up and pre-force the plants in the greenhouse, and if the cold period for that cultivar is 10 weeks, the bulbs will have to be planted to start their cold period 11 weeks before 7 December: around 20 September. The pots can then be housed around 1 December. The same method can be used to calculate the earliest date for planting hyacinths in pots for a later housing date.

Potential pest transfer mediated by international ornamental plant trade

In recent years, the keeping of ornamental freshwater animals and plants in garden ponds has been growing in popularity. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is one of the preferred macrophytes seasonally imported mainly from South-eastern Asia throughout the world. This constitutes a secondary introduction inasmuch as the species is native to South America. Although many assemblages of aquati...

Non-circulating Hydroponic Methods for Growing Tomatoes

‘Big Beef’ tomatoes produced 2.68 kg/plant from a 72 day harvest period when they were grown in 0.35 liter aluminum beverage cans by a sub-irrigation hydroponic method. Tomatoes growing in net pots (70 ml) suspended by expanded polystyrene bead boards with a sub-irrigation method gave similar yields in one trial but lower yields in another trial than tomatoes growing in beverage cans. Tomatoes ...

Use of Palm Waste Cellulose as a Substitute for Common Growing Media in Aglaonema Growing

In order to evaluate the possibility use of palm waste cellulose as a substitute substrate for growing pot plants, an experiment was conducted in completely randomized block design with 6 replication and six treatments on Aglaonema sp. The treatments were 5 levels including 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 palm celluloid wastes mixed with different rates of some amendments such as peat, coconut coir, perl...

Phyto-Chemical and Morphological Characters of Calendula officinalis as Affected by Micronutrients

In order to study the effect of foliar applications of micronutrients on yield, extraction oil production and chemical composition of pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), two experiments were conducted in the randomized complete block design with three replications in Shahrekord, Iran during two growing seasons 2014 and 2015. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of foliar...

Pot size matters: a meta-analysis of the effects of rooting volume on plant growth

Themajority of experiments in plant biology use plants grown in some kind of container or pot.We conducted a meta-analysis on 65 studies that analysed the effect of pot size on growth and underlying variables. On average, a doubling of the pot size increased biomass production by 43%. Further analysis of pot size effects on the underlying components of growth suggests that reduced growth in smal...
